Secondary Education Programs

Secondary Waterwatch education programs are designed to develop students' in-depth knowledge about water quality issues in particular as well as encourage critical thinking and decision making skills about natural resource management in general.

Waterwatch lessons are linked to the ACT ciriculum framework and and the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI)

2008 Offerings

Riparian Zone Assessment
Students identify, count and measure plants and physical features to assess riparian zone health and then plan strategies to improve the site based on their findings.

Water Quality Assessment
Students use the techniques practiced throughout the country to measure the physical and chemical parameters that affect health in a waterway near them.

Macro-Invertebrate Survey
After capture, identification and release of aquatic insect larvae and other small creatures, students use their findings to assess the long term health of a waterway near them

Drain Stenciling
Students get to know their neighbourhood and participate in raising public awareness about water quality issues in their community.

Where's the Water? Do the Maths

What does sustainable use of a renewable resource mean to us? Students explore the water issues of Canberra.

Waterwatch also works with teachers on programs for monitoring of wetland and riparian sites close to their schools, and can assist with individual student projects.
